Turning Bedtime Into Connection: A 5-Day Journaling Challenge

The 5-Day Bedtime Journaling Challenge

Some of the nicest conversations I have with my little one happen at night, just before she falls asleep.
Not during the day, not on a walk, not even while eating – but in that quiet moment when she’s tucked in and her mind finally slows down.

One evening she told me about a small happy moment from school – something that made her smile, but she never mentioned it all day. It wasn’t anything big, but it mattered to her.
And I realised: these tiny moments slip away if we don’t give them space.

That’s when I started doing a small journaling check-in with her at bedtime.

No “activity”, no setup – just a two-minute pause before goodnight.

Why bedtime works

Children don’t always open up when we ask.
They open up when they feel calm and unhurried.

Bedtime gives them silence
no noise, no rush, no competition for attention.

They’re not trying to finish anything…
they’re just being.

What we do each night

I printed a simple 5-day sheet and kept it by the bed.
We fill one small box every night.

The prompts are:

  • The best part of today was…

  • The hardest part of today was…

  • Tomorrow I want to try…

Some nights she shares a full story.
Some nights it’s just a line.
Some nights she’s giggly and sleepy and we keep it light.

It’s not about a perfect answer.
It’s about noticing the day before letting go of it.

What changed

She started spotting small good moments on her own
like she was saving them to tell me later.

And I noticed how much she relaxes once she feels heard – even briefly.

Bedtime became less of a switch-off and more of a slow landing.

It’s not dramatic.
It’s gentle – and gentle is enough.

If you want to try this too

Just print the sheet, keep it near the bed, and fill one box each night.
Two minutes are enough.
Your presence matters more than the writing.

And if you do try it…

I’d love to hear how it went – what your little one shared, or even the small moments that surprised you.
If you choose to share, I’d be happy to read your experience.

What do you think?

  1. 🧪 Pre-submission hygiene for manuscripts and blog drafts: run a text-only pass with ai watermark removal to surface zero-width characters, confusables, stray RTL marks, and copy-paste artifacts; the report highlights risky spans, keeps citations and headings intact, and exports a clean diff so editors can approve changes; this reduces false flags in LMS portals and improves downstream formatting for PDF/EPUB conversion without claiming to “bypass detectors,” focusing instead on integrity, transparency, and stable typography for owned or licensed copy.
